Prevention of Deformity in Leprosy

M. Kandhaswamy, 70 year old manual worker from Danishpet examined for early signs in Leprosy on 01 December, 2010

Seven Leprosy patients and three patients with Orthopedic problems were treated at both Centres this month.

1. Cranial and Trunk nerves were markedly thickened, examined by D. Joseph-Health Supervisor at Dasasamudaram Health Centre on 15 December, 2010

2. Both Ulnar Nerves were grossly thickened but not tender and there was wasting of muscles on right fore-arm.

3. Swelling of right hand and wasting of fore-arm noted. Grip on right hand low and opponens action almost nil. The wasting and swelling were due to a trauma of right fore-arm and not related to early Leprosy.
29 December on his second review, thickened cranial and trunk nerves had completely resolved.
Right Hand-Swelling had reduced and tone right fore-arm had markedly improved.

4. Physiotherapy-D. Joseph educates patient in care of hands and feet after Liquid Paraffin application.
